What Should You Spend On Podcast Editing?
If you're thinking of hiring a podcast editor, there's a 50/50 chance the first question you had was, "How much is this going to cost me?" Of course, as with most things, the answer is, "It depends." But that doesn't mean anything goes.[ 🗨️ Join the Conversation ]Hiring a podcast editor can be a bit of a scary thing - not only because you're giving away a bit of the control of your show. Giving up a little of the creativity. Trusting someone else to make decisions that are at least as good as what you would do. But that trust factor is only one.Bringing on an editor is also a financial commitment. That is, unless you think you can find someone who will be willing to offer the level of service you need for some kind of barter agreement of the promise of experience and exposure. Not to fear, though. While there is a financial component it doesn't have to be scary.Like the other things we've talked about, it's possible to develop a plan. To have a framework for making the decision. What Will You Focus On Once You Have a Podcast Editor?
You're almost ready to start talking with editors. Over the past few episodes, you've gone through the process of clarifying the goal you're shooting for and any gaps that might exist. You've identified some things you'd like an editor to help you with and even started prioritizing things. But before you start looking for an editor, manager, or producer, there are three things I think you should consider. We're going to cover the first one this week. What will you focus on next?Or put another way, what will you do with all your free time? While this might seem like a "throwaway" question, it's incredibly important because it not only helps you identify the value of bringing a podcast editor, manager, or producer into your production, but it also helps you actually maintain your focus as you navigate the transition you're about to go through.[ 🗨️ Join the Conversation ]Links & ResourcesLinks & ResourcesThe Magic Wand Question For Your Podcast - Thinking about your ideal podcasting future 3 years out, what might you want to focus on first? What's Falling Off of Your Podcasting Plate? - In this episode, we took stock of the things we either can't seem to get to or the things that keep getting pushed to the back burner (or worse...dropped unintentionally).Listen to Hiring a Podcast Editor Hiring a Podcast Editor website Mentioned in this episode:15 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Podcast EditorIf you want to get the clarity you need to avoid a hiring mistake with your podcast, you will want to grab this free guide. Consider This Before Choosing What Kind of Podcast Editor You Want
We've talked a lot over the last few episodes about what you want and need, and that's important. But one thing I think many people miss when they are looking for an editor is that not every editor has the same kind of business model.Think it doesn't matter?Think again. Your editor's business model will significantly influence the kinds of services they are able to offer, the way you work with them, and so much more. Each different business model archetype has some pros and cons. After today, you'll have an understanding of each, and be able to pick the one that you think will work best for you. What's Falling Off of Your Podcasting Plate?
One thing that I see happen to a lot of podcasters might be happening to you as well - we start podcasting and our "to do" list just keeps growing and growing. Maybe there are new things you want to do. Maybe there are things you used to do that you just can't get to because something else is taking your time. Maybe your ability to grow your show or your income is stalled because other things are getting done first. That can be a scary place. But today we're going to take some of the fear out of it. We're going to drag that monster out of the dark and into the light, give it a name, and start to tame it.A little too silly? Maybe. But there's some serious power in taking the time to take stock of what's taking you away from what you really need to be doing. And that's what we're going to do today.I want to say from the outset, that not everything that's on your to do list necessarily deserves to be there... the same is true for me. But we're going to take a brainstorming approach to getting it all down on paper. Then you can go through it later when you start to decide what ACTUALLY matters to you.Good with that?OK.
